12-24-07    My trusty Ford F250 took a dump after 232,000 miles. I could have got her repaired but decided to get a new ride. I went with the Toyota Tundra Double cab with the 5.7 V8..........Happy! I don't miss the F250 but we did do a lot of miles and thus had some great memories. We did two trips back to Ohio to race with our brothers in the Midwest at Ray Martin's event. On both trips we had 4 guys in the ole' Crew Cab. in 2001 we left Ohio toward home with 5 in the cab. Kris Waters needed a ride to the Indianapolis Airport. As we (Brad Hannig, Brent Bush, Danny Lowers, Kris and myself) were passing through Columbus, Ohio, Kris waters was taking his turn at the wheel before being dropped off in Indy. It was during rush hour and we decided to take the bypass off Hwy 70 and miss the traffic in Columbus. There was some road construction going on and at the last second Kris crossed over a few lanes to get to the bypass making the construction workers jump out of the way. We were towing 11 motorcycles and equipment in George Tuckers trailer. We had just replace all the tires on the trailer a few days ago but that is another story. Anyway we took the bypass and never hit too much traffic until we were coming back toward Hwy 70 when we began to come into a lot of traffic. About 2 hours had passed since we took the bypass until we were back on Hwy 70. We were moving slowly on Hwy 70 for a while when we noticed some road construction. Soon we saw the construction workers. It was the same guys who jumped out of our way earlier that day...........We just realized that we had drove through Columbus and after passing the city we took the bypass all the way around to the east side and drove through Columbus again. We got Kris to the Airport late but he was able to catch a flight that next morning.....In 2003 Brad, Brent, Scott Nelson and myself made the trip again, this time towing Jeff Welsh's trailer. That was the epic mud race at Broken Spokes Raceway. The next morning driving up a dirt road to Scenic Highlands Raceway we got stuck on a slippery hill leading into the track. Pretty much everyone who was going to race that day was stuck behind us. We ended up emptying the trailer and making our way to the track without bikes, tools or riding gear. Each vehicle that came by our pit would drop off a bike or a tool box. Eventually everything was delivered to our pit and we were able to go racing. On the way home from that trip Scott Nelson had the option of 4 gas stations, one on each corner of a freeway off ramp. Four name brands and a "Swiffty" gas station that was twenty cents cheaper a gallon.......Scott chose "Swiffty". That ended up being a long night driving 30 mph down Hwy 70 with a clogged fuel filter. The drive from St Louis to Denver took forever. We changed the fuel filter 4 times on that trip. I had gasoline all over my clothes. Fifty six hours from Ohio to Carlsbad. Non stop except to eat, fuel up and change the fuel filter......I have many great motocross memories associated with my F250. I guess I really do miss her but love the new memory maker..........Merry Christmas everyone...........e

12-20-07    The year is coming to an end, it's Christmas time and I haven't even thought about doing any Christmas shopping yet. I know that I am in trouble since I am scheduled to work at the fire station for a few of the remaining days before it's too late to get the shopping done. I am not a shopper, from the moment I pass through the mall doors until I am back in my pick up I am walking a gear higher. I want in and out of that place as fast as possible. I don't understand the hobby of shopping..........The Christmas GP/Toy Drive was successful again, I thought the track layout was nice and the track was prepped very well by Chris Tocco who is now working at GH helping Lori out. Thanks Chris. I had a lot of fun in the 40-99 GP (the first race of the day). The track was smooth as could be for GH. I had some good battles and even made a few passes on my 40+ Intermediate buddies but I kept blowing a corner coming out of the canyon and would get passed back. For the last half of the race Charlie Beck and I had a good race. It felt great to be back on the track competing again. It's been 15 months since I last raced. I felt pretty good in the first race but tried the 2 hour Ironman and about died. It wasn't long before I started looking for the white flag, an hour and a half later it came out. Thank you for all the toy donations. Many children will have a better Christmas because of you..........It's almost Supercross season again. We are working really hard to make it our best season. The team will be doing the West Coast SX on KTM 250 SX bikes and some of the West Coast Nationals. Carlos Gonzalez and Tyler Kaliziak will be back with the team this season and will be joined by Billy Swapp and Bradley Graham. Austin Prescott will be our test rider and will be racing with the team........A few days ago Dennis Romero, his father Tom and I drove to ACP to pick up the FirePoliceMX.com semi. Dennis and Tom drove it back to California but before we left Dennis and I got in some laps at ACP along with Rick Nagle (Wantta1.com). The track was prepped for practice day on Sunday and remained in great shape and was still moist for us. It was a lot of fun to have the place to ourselves. ACP should be a great event, don't forget to pre-enter and save some dough. Well Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanza and have a great Holiday Season and a Happy New Year................e

11-30-07   I woke up this morning and tried to make some changes on FirePoliceMX.com but was unable to open up the site to make the changes. My password and user name that have been saved for the past few years were deleted and I couldn't remember what they were. I thought I remembered, I tried every possibility (I thought). Panic set in and I made the call to Net Nation to see what I needed to do. Maybe the bill didn't get paid, even though it is taken out of my VISA automatically. After waiting on hold for about a half hour, I finally got through to a girl who spoke some English.......some. She kept asking me questions in broken computer talk, I had no idea what she was asking....ZERO idea. But she kept rephrasing her question using the same Geek Squad type questions. I had no idea what the heck was going on. She asked me "where are you right now, FTP?" I told here I was at home. After I convinced her that I was an idiot we began to communicate and eventually she understood that I needed a user name and password. An email later and I was back in business...........The past two weeks have been difficult for me and everyone at work. Two of my co workers lost three of their children in an accident at Glamis. Last Friday was the funeral for Samantha Bestwick and today, a week later was the funeral for Amanda and Jacob Gonzales. I can't imagine how my buddies and their families feel. I know that I feel like I want to help but there isn't much I can do but be there for them. Today was my on duty day and a bunch of guys came in and worked all of our shifts spots for us. They donated their time so we could go to the funeral. The support from the Fire Department for these families has been huge. I am very proud to be part of the Fire Department family. I also am very proud of our organization and the support you have shown..........Needless to say, I have not been on a bike for the past two weeks and don't know when I will get the chance to ride before the Christmas GP. It will be my first race back since my knee injury. I am not looking to make a podium, I am just hoping to finish each race and get home before the cramping sets in. I am almost in the worst shape of my life right now. I can still snap my AXO's so I know it's not the worst shape ever but I'm only a few cheese burgers away.................e

11-2-07    A year ago I was on crutches recovering from a severed patellar tendon. It seemed like a long recovery but it has only been 13 months. Today the alarm went off at 7am and everything felt back to normal. The planets were in alignment again. A half hour later I was in the driveway loading my Kawasaki KX450F in the back of my F250 as my neighbors were driving to work. After stopping at Jack in the Box for a Meaty Breakfast Burrito I was on my way to Perris Raceway again. I haven't ridden Perris for a few years. I was looking forward to the best dirt on earth and the Vet friendly track to get my moto legs under me again. To my surprise the mellow terrain  of Perris had changed to a more jumpy layout. On my second riding session I decided to start jumping some stuff. The first few jumps had my heart beating out of my chest but I landed them fine. It's like Dr. Leo Marvin's book "Baby Steps", One step at a time, one step at a time. I can't wait to get back there and continue to get my head straight and back into racing mode. I really never pushed it and thus didn't get too tired but my arms did fade and I could tell that they actually need more work than my legs, weird. After Perris on the way down 74 toward the 15, I saw a Del Taco and decided to stop in for a little Macho Combo Burrito w/o sour cream of course. The counter girl took my order and told me that I was number 217. I looked at her and thought...duh, look out the window, I'm number 519 but decided to kept my mouth shut. What was she thinking? Everyone knows that Kris waters is #217 and that Gary Bohannon is trying to take it from him and be the true 217. No Burrito for dinner, I'm on a diet....What?............Really?...........no............eDub

11-1-07     I got home late yesterday and asked Sue to go to lunch around 2pm. We usually sit in the driveway saying "where do you want to go?" "I don't care, where do you want to go?" ""I don't care where do you want to go?" Then I say "The gas station", there is this little Mexican restaurant at the in the Chevron station by our house that is pretty good but Sue hates it and refuses to eat in a gas station. So I know that she will say "No" and then be forced into picking a place. Then she usually says "MacDonalds" because she knows that I hate MacDonalds and will say "No". Eventually we end up with somewhere to eat. Yesterday after the gas station and MacDonalds were vetoed Sue suggested Sizzler, I said OK and we were off. I backed out of the driveway and into the street. The garage door was on it's way down, almost to the bottom. I put the transmission in drive and began to roll forward when Sue said "THE GARAGE!". I looked to my left and low and behold the garage door was on it's way back up. A can of AMSOIL chain lube had fallen off the shelf and rolled under the door thus making it go back up. Ed is suffering from a condition known as GDOCD.  The formal medical term is Garage Door Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  This disorder has just recently become out of control.  Whenever we leave the house and drive away Ed has to look back a minimum of 5 times to make sure he closed the garage door.  And on many, many, many, many occasions we have actually had to turn around and go back to make sure he shut the garage door.  Never once have we returned to find it still open. (From Sue's "Inside the FPMX") There we go GDOCD is not a bad thing now is it? Last night I had the duty of handing out Halloween candy. I am proud to say that I didn't eat any but maybe that was because I was already stuffed from a late lunch. We had several kinds of candy to hand out but the only one that the kids cared about, and they really were excited to get was Air Heads. I had never heard of Air Heads candy before last night but it was a huge success. Every kid said something positive about getting a bar. I had to give away Butterfingers and Milk Duds with an Air Head just to get rid of them. Ok I have another pet peeve to bring up. Last time we talked about Dwayne Prickett and the CHP putting stop lights on freeway on ramps......terrible idea! Come on Dwayne.....But today's pet peeve might even top the freeway stop light. Sizzler, why in the heck do you put foil around your baked potatoes and then leave it on the potato when you serve it to the customer? Dude the freakin' potato falls apart when trying to remove the foil and you end up with butter all over your fingers. Baked Potato lesson: Wash the potato and dry it. Rub a little cooking oil on the potato or spray it with PAM. Soak up excess oil on a paper towel. Take a little seasoning salt (Lowery's with a pinch of black pepper mixed in or if you can get a hold of Santa Maria style tri tip rub use that) and rub it on the oiled potato. Don't put on too much seasoning. Poke a few holes in the potato with a fork. Bake the potato with out foil for an hour and a half at 400*. Thank me later..............e

10-26-07    "No, I like all you Navy boys. Every time we've gotta go someplace and fight, you fellas always give us a ride". (A Few Good Men) Here in Southern California we are just finishing up with one of the worst firestorms that I have ever seen, if not the worst. While driving down PCH in Malibu last Sunday I saw something that made me think about YZ Ernie and some of the bantering that the Police Officers and Firefighters have on the message board from time to time........Yzernie [11:44 P.M.]:  "real men don't stage" (4-8-07 - the FPMX Journal)...........So we were rolling Northbound on PCH, driving into what HELL must look like when the thought of YZ Ernie popped into my head. I chuckled for a second..."Real men don't stage" uh huh, ok........All I could think was "Real men don't direct traffic"......"No, I like all you P.D. boys. Every time we've gotta go someplace and fight fire, you fellas always direct traffic"..........I did get a kick out of seeing that and realizing that it was similar as when we stage. I couldn't wait to tell Ernie that we were even, that the staging thing doesn't count anymore.  All I can say is, "Thank you for doing your job and keeping us safe".......Now I have a pet peeve to discuss.....Who in the heck decided to put stop lights on freeway on ramps? It drives me crazy! You just get a head of steam up and then you have to stop and wait for the light to turn green. You only have a few feet to accelerate and get up to speed to merge.....? ? ? ? Was it you, Dwayne Prickett? I know it must be a CHP guy........e

10-15-07    I was just sitting here minding my own business when I heard an email be delivered to my computer. It was Danny Lowers telling me to write in the journal and also to hire Kevin Windham for the Supercross team.......I'll try the journal thing first, I think it will be easier and cheaper........Well Sue and I spent the weekend in Las Vegas at the US Open. It was a great time. I wasn't very excited to go, I've seen enough races this year and didn't expect this one to be any different then the 16 SX races that I attended but I was mistaken. Maybe it was that there was no pressure of having a team there or maybe it was the fact that we never left the hotel and had to fight traffic and deal with parking and being out in the sun all day. In fact I think that we had the closest possible room to the track. First floor right next to the food court. What more can you ask for? The racing was great! Night one was good but night two was awesome! Lots of hard charging from the guys in the back. Namely: Reed, Langston & Short. Reedy took out all the low numbers in the first corner and it made for some great racing in the main.......We're finishing up some details for the Supercross team for '08 and I will let you know ASAP. It might be a few week before contracts are signed. I learned a few years ago to keep my mouth shut until things are all signed and checks are written. I could tell you things right now but two things would happen......(a) Everything would change just like it does on a daily basis and (b) Some other team would steal our deal...........Anyway I am looking forward to riding again. I pick up my KX450F from RACE TECH on Wednesday morning and might hit a track on the way home but would rather end up at Ocotillo Wells. If anyone wants to ride Wednesday out there I will get my bike tomorrow and meet you there in the AM on wednesday. Man it feels good to know that I can go riding again. Just having a bike in the garage makes a world of difference for me. It's freedom!.......The 2007 Nationals are over and done. I didn't get a single moto in, well I kind of snuck out in a few at Glen Helen a few weeks ago and let me tell you - IT FELT GOOD!!!! At Competitive edge I did a few motos on a KTM 450SX and felt . . . . scared or at least uneasy. But getting on the Kawi after a year off the bike felt almost too normal for me. I felt pretty fast on stock suspension. One moto I took off with my class (40 Intermediate), I was mid pack through the first corner then backed off so I wouldn't mess with the guys racing. I felt pretty confident that I could have made a few passes but decided to just hang back and ride behind the class. I watched the leaders for a couple of laps until my arms faded from a lack of riding. My knee felt good although it did feel weird once when bottoming out the suspension on a little double at the bottom of the down hill. RACE TECH should cure that problem......The Shape-O-Meter hasn't budged for a while. I need to start working on that soon. I don't think the AXO zippers are made for that much pressure and I refuse to wear the next size up. I'll bring back the John Travolta/Saturday Night fever look before I go up a size....................e

9-27-07    About five years ago I sold my screenprinting equipment to Sogi Auchumoto, he wanted to get into screenprinting and I had had enough. So I had him come out to the house and I taught him a crash course on t-shirt printing. It was a good deal for me because I had him print some jobs for me while I nested in front of the TV. I would go out and check on him every once in a while and he was doing fine. Can't beat free labor. I was glad to see the equipment go but missed printing every so often. This last year I really started to get the itch to get back into it and mentioned it to Mike Leckliter a few weeks ago. It just so happened that Mike's son had picked up some screenprinting equipment and had it stored in Mike's garage. The equipment sat for several months without being put into service. Mike wanted it out of his garage and asked me if I wanted it......It just so happens that it was the same equipment that I sold to Sogi. I am in the process of setting up my garage as a printing shop again and am as happy as can be about it.............A year ago I had knee surgery and sold my '06 KX450F, a few months later the FPMX Supercross team was going to be on Kawasakis and I acquired an '07 KX450F from Hahm Motorsports. A few weeks later we switched to KTM and I had to purchase the Kawi at a discounted price. I was planning to keep it and ride it when I got back on the track. As the SX season went on and I was unable to work I sold the bike to Jim Eberle to pay some bills. This morning I bought an "07 KX450F from Jim Eberle, yes the same one that I sold him several months ago. My name is still on the title. It looks to be in great shape. I am also very happy to have a bike in the garage again. I hate being bike less. I need a bike(s), it's a direct link to my sanity. It seems like life has done a 360* on me lately. I am back where I started with the t-shirt stuff and the bike. Life is good........... We close out the Nationals this week at Glen Helen, I think it's been a pretty good season. I really didn't enjoy being a spectator too much but knowing that my body would heal and that I was going to get back on the pegs really helped. You know how things come in threes? You know, like your watching the news and some old time actor dies. A week later another one is gone. Now it's panic time for all old actors until the 3rd one joins the first two.....Now the remaining actors can relax and get off Jenny Craig and go back to their old lifestyle. "Screenprinting equipment", "'07 KX450F"............I think it's time to do a 360* and return to where it all began in 1989. How do you guys (and Pix) feel about Perris in '08?.......See ya at the Glen............e

9-7-07    I took the day off of work today. Sue and I got home late last night/early this morning from Motobowl and I just didn't feel like getting up early and then being tired at work all day. Motobowl was awesome as usual, we had a good team but didn't score high enough to come close to beating the team of Erin Bates, Michael Young, Blake Fair, Gary Aguilar, Gary's brother, Ed Niemela, Ozzie Cuevas and Dwayne Prickett as they took the top honors and the coveted TLD bowling pin home. I am proud of Erin and the boys for representing the FPMX so well. Thank you..........The two events that I enjoy the most each year are Motobowl and the FPMX Banquet. They are way different from each other but a lot of fun nonetheless. Sue took a lot of pictures at Motobowl last night and I will post them on FirePoliceMX.com as soon as I get them from her.......The Glen Helen AMA National is this weekend, I am planning to attend the event on Sunday to see who is going to come out on top in the 450 and 250 classes. It's nice to have the championships in jeopardy going into the last 2 motos of the series. It should be a hot day out there at the Glen. That combined with the roughest track on the circuit should make for some interesting racing. May the guy with the lowest Shape-O-Meter rating win......Please signup for the Banquet ASAP, I need the names in by September 21st. There will be no day of the event signups. I wish we could but The NOS Event Center needs exact numbers to prepare the dinner and seating arrangements.........e

9-6-07    Tonight is the 4th annual WMXF Motobowl. This will be my third year to participate in this event. Two years ago I was lucky enough to be invited to go by Rich Eggett of Kingdom clothing (Kingdomcrown.com), he bought me a spot on a team with Jeff Ward and Ryan Sipes. I am not a bowler but was able to hold my own and get 4 strikes out of the 10 frames. I think I only picked up one spare and in the other frames left a lot of pins. Jeff Ward, also not a bowler was able to get 6 strikes. Ryan Sipes made a great decision sticking to motocross. It didn't hurt that two of the guys on our team actually owned bowling shirts. They didn't get as many strikes as Jeff and I but they were killing it on the spares. They were actually good bowlers. We won Motobowl that night, I still have the bowling pin trophy sitting on my desk right in front of me now. I don't keep any other trophies around. The only other awards are four number 1 FPMX plates that I was able to pick up over the years. They hang in the FPMX office on the wall in front of my desk above the TV.......In 1993/94 I was at Glen Helen on a Peak Pro Circuit Honda CR250 that I bought off Jeremy McGrath. This was the fastest 250 that I had ever ridden up to that date. It was a Thursday and I remember coming out of a left hand corner side by side with Mike Fisher. He had taken the inside of the corner and was going for the pass. In front of us was a straightaway about 75 yards long with two small jumps, you could up shift and hold it wide open over the whole section. I looked to my left as I was coming out of the corner and saw the #14 factory KTM that Fisher rode that year. We both pinned it down the straight. He was unable to pull my PC Honda. It was a surreal experience as I was going factory fast next to a top pro who was trying to pass me and was unable to. I was on top of the world, I was fast! Yeah, I was fast right up to the point where the track turned to the left and then a quick right. For that whole straightaway I was as fast as Mike Fisher. But reality hit hard when over the course of two quick corners Mike pulled me by 25 feet. Back to reality.....I am a Fireman who enjoys motocross. I will never ever be able to corner like that guy just did.......But Motobowl is the great equalizer....We all suck at bowling! But in that setting I have been able to beat the fastest motocross riders in the world..........So when telling stories many years from now I can be completely honest and say "Yeah I raced motocross back in the day....(STOP) Oh and I beat Rick Johnson, Nick Wey, David Vuillemin, Kevin Windham, Grant Langston, Mike Dunn, Andrew Short, Davi Millsaps, etc........So tonight I have teamed up with Jeff Ward again. He is so competitive and really wants to win. I missed that intensity last year and look forward to trying to win again. Donny Rivas will be bowling with us along with Leticia Cline and a few others. I'll let you know how it goes..........e

8-29-07    Before I get started here I would like a apologize to my wife for taking her picture down out of my locker and putting up those goons......In other words, I got in trouble when she read my journal.......The goon pics stay but the bride and family pics will accompany them. Sue has been a great supporter of the FPMX. She is not a fan of my racing, actually she hates it when I am out there but continues to support me. I appreciate that, Thanks Sue.......I need the goon pics to motivate me to continue to prepare for battle again in the 40+ Intermediate class and on to the Fiddy Plus class in 2009.......Holy crap........Fiddy............I am doing my best to hold back until after the GH rounds in a few weeks. I want a bike so bad but don't really feel a need to race the last couple of rounds. Personally I don't care too much about medals any more, it wouldn't bother me to never win a moto as long as I won the # 1 plate. Yeah championships are where it's at for me. It's been that way for a long time. Back in my basketball days I didn't care so much if we won all the games as much as we did when it mattered. The playoffs were a whole different animal.....must win!...........Well I finally got away from the fire station, it seems like forever since I woke up in my own bed and wasn't heading out the door at 5am to go to work. Sleeping in is a good thing! I want to thank those who sent in their money for the race and the Banquet but a special Thank You to Brian Frasz who mailed in his GH entry, Banquet and Christmas GP entry......Brian, I will make sure that some nice contingency prize finds it's way to you at the Banquet. I know that you guys want to hold on to your money as long as possible and pay at the last minute. I don't blame you. I think if I were in your shoes, I would pay on race day and not worry about the discount but I'm not in your shoes. I'm in mine, I hope that they are mine......Anyway many things need to be paid for prior to race day and if the pre entries don't come in then I front the money. I usually go into each event broke. But then again I like to see a long line at signups on race day too...........Please, if you are planning to go to the banquet, and I hope you are, sign up ASAP. I need a total count on September 21st to schedule the catering..........The Supercross silly season is upon us again. I'll let you know how things are shaping up...........e

8-15-07    Most guys at the Fire Station have pictures of their wife, girlfriend, mistress, or some pinup chick hanging on the inside of their locker door to greet them every time they visit their locker room sanctuary. I for one have chosen a different path.......I have pictures of.........Hold on, I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I'll get back to that in a few minutes on that one...............Anyway, I, like many of you have suffered injury (injuries) from racing and riding motorcycles. I know that it is part of this sport and thus part of our lives. After injury many decisions need to be made. Wives, family and friends  have strong opinions on your returning to the dirt haven that we call a track. Employers and co-workers feel the need to chime in also. Many never again place their boots back on the pegs of their bikes for various reasons. Yet as the body heals the mind begins to forget the pain of the last injury. Soon you start to crave that drug that we call motocross and you either decide to return to the track and re-enter your motocross life or you continue to fight off the desire to ride and compete on the track again. If you choose to stay off the bike you soon find activities to replace the adrenalin rush that motocross has provided for you. You continue to move from sport to sport but never ever find a replacement for motocross. It's a sad pattern but it is reality. I have been through this twice and decided to never ever quit again. I saw a family friend at my in-laws 50th anniversary party last week. I haven't seen him in years. He is 71 years old now, he was asking me which bike I though he should get to do some Dual Sporting in Ocotillo Wells. S E V E N T Y   O N E years old!!!!!! He was in fantastic shape and looked much younger than others his age. I too want to be riding at seventy one years of age............Right now I still do not own a bike and it's driving me crazy. I feel healthy enough to ride but an unable to do so. I am going through withdrawals from this pathetic situation that I have put myself in. So I decided to train and get in shape for January at ACP. I have a hard time being self motivated when it comes to training so I have had to find things to push me into the gym and cut the amount of food that funnels down my esophagus. I have a personal trainer at work who constantly reminds me to limit my intake and works with me in the gym........Another motivation tool that I am using........Now this is what I was talking about earlier with the pinup girls and all. And I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I am not batting for the other team. But I find it motivating to open my locker door and see the faces of a few people. They are not pleasing to the eye, at least not for me. They are not in a bikini (although if I had a picture of them in a bikini you can bet I would have it on this website for all to see). No, these pictures are there to motivate me to get my butt out of the kitchen and into the weight room. They are the pictures of Ernie Kopasz, Dan Hadfield, Denis Moon, Steve Marquez, Russell Lee, David Mason and Dennis Romero. I am still looking for a portrait of Lyle Raymond to add to the mix as well as a few others. Never again do I want my competitors to bide their time until I tire out and drop positions......I have a tape of me holeshoting at ACP in 2006 on my RM 250 against the 450 four strokes. In the back ground I can hear YZ Ernie saying "I wonder how long it will take Ed to fade?"......The words "I wonder how long it will take Ed to fade?" hangs in my locker just above the pics of these guys.........I'll be back soon.............e

7-19-07    I have been off the bike for ten months now.  Last month at Competitive Edge (Round 5) I was able to get some laps in on a KTM 450, I felt a little bit like a fish out of water but it was fun anyway. The following day I was able to take Shannon Dicus' KTM 300 (two stroke) out for several laps. The motor felt a lot like my  '05 RM250. And Now I was in a gray area again, which bike do I buy for '08? But then I decided to take the KTM 450 back out on the track. This was right after getting off the two stroke. I knew right then that the four stroke was the best bike for me right now. I must have adapted during the '06 season. My '06 Kawasaki 450 was a great bike and had a killer motor. I loved the 4 speed trany, it took me all of the summer series to adapt but finally felt like a four stroke guy at the end of last season. It would be stupid of me to go with Kawasaki for '08 knowing that KTM will be stepping up their support of our Supercross team for next season. So do I go for the KTM SX 450 and get right back into motocross or do I go with the KTM EXC 450 or 525 and do the dual sport thing during my 49th year and try to win the Dual Sport Championship? It would be nice to hang another #1 plate in the FPMX Office....Hummmm???? Then I could return healthy for the 2009 season ready to do battle with the Fiddy Plus guys. Decisions.......Over the 4th of July Sue and I were able to spend a week on Lake Powell with family on a house boat. It was a great time. I kind of miss the Summer series but Havasu and Powell are nice alternatives........One thing leads to another.......Here's my story.......Sue wanted a step for the back of her WaveRunner. I bought one for her birthday last year (July 1). I installed it before we left for Havasu last May. It was tough for me to fit inside the WaveRunner to install the nuts and washers on the inside of the boat. I didn't fit in the hull very well. In fact I had to support all of my weight on my ribs and have my head buried inside. Several times I got stuck for a few moments but was able to eventually work my way out of the hull to get some air. Anyway I didn't get the seal that I had hoped for and Sue's boat had a very slow leak. I noticed this on day one of the trip but the bilge seemed to stay ahead of the leak so I would fix it when we got home. That was a great idea for the fist few days but one day the wind blew and the WaveRunner sat all day and took on a lot of water. Anyway it got up into the motor over night. I pulled the plugs and pumped it out and got the boat running. I found out that water doesn't lubricate like oil and ended up catching a ring and destroying the front cylinder. We lost all compression in that cylinder. I decided to fix it myself, I mean how hard could it be? It's just a simple two stroke. Two days later I finally tore it down enough to get the pistons off the rods. All three cylinders are scard. There is no room to work in the motor compartment and many of the bolts are in places that you can barely reach and can't see. I made a few trips to Sears to pick up special tools. Anyway putting it back together should be just as fun.......I should have gone to work and put in some overtime and had a dealer repair the Yamaha.........One thing leads to another (part 2)......Sue has wanted a High Definition Flat Screen for the bedroom for quite a while. So I bought her one for her birthday this year (that's a step up from last years gift) "Step up" get it? So we get the HD TV and now she wants HD boxes from DISH so she can watch her HD shows.......But Direct TV has a better deal........So we get Direct TV. We have an HD TV down stairs in the living room but it never really impressed me that much. Well we got a HD box for that TV too and WOW. Well the Direct TV guys left and all of the sudden our internet service goes out. So two days ago I had to sit around all day and wait for the Direct TV guys to show up and yesterday I had to wait around all day for the phone company to show up. "We'll be there between 9am and 5 pm" Why don't they just say 5:30pm? That's when they show up anyway........I'm in a moto funk right now. I am feeling pretty good and want to ride but for the first time in several years don't have a bike in the garage. I hate riding borrowed bikes. I am very picky when it comes to suspension and handlebars. Also lever placement......I'll just wait until I can afford a new ride. It shouldn't be long now that I am back to work again. Sorry that I haven't written in the Journal for a while. With no riding and no SX going on I have found myself doing non moto things............e

6-23-07    After the football season was over during my Senior year in High School  (1977) I  moved to one of the regular P.E. classes, it was third period. Being in the Best Shape of my Life ("1" on the Shape-O-Meter ), I was able to rule the court/field. It was almost like cheating. All the athletes had 6th period P.E. so I was in there with the pot smokers, long hairs, motocrossers and bookworms. Non of which were any good at stick and ball sports. I had a work release program for 5th and 6th periods. I got a job down the street from the school at a place called Downey Glass and Shower Door . Basically I was the clean up guy. I would sweep and pick up all the broken glass for four hours a day, Monday thru Friday. As time went on they used me to do maintenance on the delivery trucks, build shelves etc. I was a temporary employee and no one really talked to me much. It was almost like I was invisible. Somehow the glass picked it's self up. I mostly worked around these two guys, Mike & Dave. They were in their late 20's, seemed old at the time but still pretty cool. I mean they listened to KMET (a little bit of heaven, 94.7) ,the best rock station in L.A. at the time. There was also this guy named Gus that was in his fifties. Gus was a fabricator and built the aluminum frames for the glass. Mike and Dave, the two guys in their late twenties were both "Glaziers" AKA glass cutters. They used water to lubricate the glass or mirrors when they cut holes for door knobs, electric outlets or whatever needed a hole. Being a bit of a prankster I decided to bring some yellow food coloring to work. During my sweeping duties I would place a couple of drops of food coloring in the water jug (1/2 gallon ish) when the glaziers weren't looking and then go about my duties before I got caught. I did this everyday for a couple of weeks. I never heard a word about it but just kept on doing it. The Glaziers and Gus all used Gus' electric coffee pot to heat water for tea and soup. So after a few weeks of coloring the jug of water yellow, I decided to color the water in the coffee pot yellow too. I would do it when I was supposed to be somewhere else working or when the glaziers were out of the room so I wouldn't be suspected of coloring the water. This went on for a few months. Still I never heard a word about it. I kept the food coloring hid in a little cavity near the glazing area so I wouldn't be caught with it in my possession. A few more weeks went by without a hint that these guys even noticed the yellow water. One day as I dropped the food coloring in the picture of water, before it spread through the water and turned yellow (it comes out red), one of the glaziers happened to drop what he was doing all of the sudden and walked over to the water container and looked in. I thought for sure that I was caught........I still had the food coloring bottle in my hand and in the other I held the lid to the food coloring bottle. The glazier saw the red food coloring dissipating and spreading through the container and turning yellow. He yelled out "It's Happening!!!!" The other glazier and Gus the old guy came running. Moments later the office staff came running out of the office. The owner also came running to the back of the shop where the water container sat. Everyone was amazed, they had no explanation.......I was dying inside as I made my way out of the room. I don't think they even noticed me. It was better than I expected. When the room cleared out I came in and asked the glaziers what the commotion was all about. I sat there with a straight face and listened to the whole story. They didn't have a clue to what was going on. Later that week as I was tossing some trash in the dumpster I saw a coffee pot torn to pieces, laying in the bottom of the dumpster. I made my way to the glazing area to see if it was the same coffee pot that I put the food coloring in........It was! CRAP! OK, so I owed Gus one coffee pot. No big deal, it was worth it. I figured that I would keep the joke going and later cough up the money for the coffee pot when I was all done messing with the minds of Downey Glass and Shower Door. A few days later I showed up to work and noticed a bunch of people huddled in a circle near the back of the property. I went to see what was going on. It was the owner of the company, the glaziers, Gus and a Plummer.......Hummm?? They were scraping the inside of one of the outdoor faucets with a screw driver. I was a bit puzzled. I had a bad feeling and decided to ask what was going on. They looked at me like it was non of my business but told me that the pipes in the building had gone bad and the entire pluming system needed to be replaced because somehow it was turning the water yellow..................."Umm, hey guys.....HELLO! GUYS, ummm.....That was me, I did it" ..........I stood there and explained what I had done............ They all stood straight up, turned and looked at me..............Not a word..........They all stood there with a puzzled look on their faces for what seemed an eternity. Finally the boss walked away with out saying a thing, just shaking his head. The glaziers started laughing and giving me a look of approval.  "You owe me a coffee pot" said Gus.......From that day on every move I made was noted. I was one of the crew not the invisible clean up boy anymore...............e

6-19-07    Remember being in High School and life seemed so complicated? Just a few years earlier life was a breeze. Summer lasted for 3 months. There was no school, you could play all day long with your friends. Building ramps and seeing who could jump their Schwinn Stingray (before BMX bikes) the furthest. Thirteen feet was the record in our neighborhood and I owned it! Yeah I owned it until some new kid showed up one day. I saw him around the neighborhood  but didn't know too much about him. He didn't play in the city sports league. Almost every kid in town played in D.J.A.A. (Downey Junior Athletic Association). We played Football, Basketball and Baseball year round from second grade until  we started High School..........Anyway this kid, I can't remember his name, come over and changed the angle on the ramp, he made it steeper. The ramp was scientifically set up by the "Athletes" and this kid had no chance to break my World (neighborhood) Record. He was going to go to high and not get the distance. Besides he wore glasses..........He came around the corner peddling as fast as he could, the last 50 feet was a straight shot to the ramp. The ramp sat on the edge of driveway right at the gutter and shot you over the lawn towards the ivy. I had never seen someone peddle so fast while approaching the ramp. The kid showed no fear as he neared the face of the new angled ramp........Wow......The bottom of his wheels were higher than the lowest part of the roof, higher than we could have imagined someone jumping. When he landed his rear wheel came apart and he crashed into the ivy. He was OK, a little banged up but OK. He also held the New World Record, seventeen feet! Later that day I broke my bike then my moms bike trying to recapture the record. To my knowledge, he still owns the record. Yeah life was pretty simple as a kid growing up. High School was a little more complicated. I remember thinking that as soon as I was out of HS things would get better. But after HS there was a little more piled on, bills, girlfriends, jobs, car problems, traffic tickets, etc. But once I get on the Fire Department I would be on Easy Street, no more worries! No financial problems!......Oops.......As time goes on it seems like there is a little more piled on top. They are different problems but still the load keeps getting a little more top heavy. I am busier than I have ever been in my life. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I chose this path but with each new thing comes a little more to pile on the top. So where I sit right now I have between 7 and 12 years left in my career with the Fire Department (if you are a betting man I would place your chips on 7) and I know that when the day comes that I hang up the turnout coat for the last time, all my worries will be gone..........Yeah right! ..................So here I sit in the worst shape of my life (19.9 on the Shape-O-Meter). I know this because I tried to play basketball the other day, the first time since my knee injury and had NO legs under me. The ball flew straight but came up short on almost every shot. That's OK because I will get my legs back soon. In fact I just started working with a personal trainer to get me into shape. Dennis Romero winning motos scares me too much to show up at an FPMX moto with jelly legs. Besides I will be fifty in two years and want to reacquaint my rear fender with Ernie Kopasz. I wonder, will life ever be like it was during those long summers when all you had to worry about was being home when the street lights came on?...........e

6-1-07    It seems like ever since I went back to work I have been running around like a head with it's chicken cut off! I've put in some overtime and thus have spent a lot of time in the station and hardly any time at home. And to top it off we have been really busy at work too with fires (more than usual). I have to make up for 7.5 months of crap. It's amazing how much we actually do over seven months and don't realize how things change. It's like going back to your old neighborhood and noticing how much the trees have grown. If you had never left you would never notice. EMT make up, CE hours, Physical fitness testing and "Boots" that got off probation and now have opinions. Yes the Department moved ahead without me and I am playing catch up. Then I decide to turn on the Shape-O-Meter and get a big surprise. I actually thought that I was in a little better shape than that. Holy Crap! I am nearing the 20th BSOML..........Being off work I had dropped about 20 lbs but being back to work I am stating to find those missing pounds. Without a bike in the garage and a reason to be in any type of shape (no motocross), I am going to have to make some drastic changes. I really can't wait to get back on the bike but actually I am not ready. I don't know why but I feel that I need more time off the bike to get physically ready. My right thigh cramped up last week while driving back from a structure. It was one of those motocross cramps that hit hard and kill! I suddenly got turrets syndrome and drove the last mile back to the station trying to stand up in the cab. The guy in the tiller box thought that I was messing around but those in the cab were able to witness it on my face. The right thigh needs a little more work. Ocotillo Wells will be my gym after the heat of the summer has past...........Rounds 5 & 6 are coming up in a week and a half. So far the pre-entry list reminds me of the Summer Series at Starwest last year. I hope many of you are just not taking advantage of the Pre-Entry savings and will signup on Monday morning........I wish I could say that I was looking forward to the race but being "Just" a promoter sucks. It is actually no fun at all. What I am looking forward to is seeing all my buddies. But not riding bites. I know that being off the bike for eight plus months is tough but then I remember MD101 was off the bike for 30 months (2.5 years) and he kept it together and make a great comeback. I'm just going to let it come to me and not push the situation. Plus KTMs cost more and it will take a little time to save the money..........e

5-19-07    I am back to work now. I was off for seven and a half months with this knee and went back for one shift, got burned out and need a break. Sue and I just got back from Lake Havasu, we were on the annual Wilson family vacation. Both of my YAMAHA WaveRunners had problems...........yamahas....$#*%. All in all it was a great time, very relaxing. No cell phone and no internet. About a day into it you just kind of melt into your beach chair and vege. The water was great, good temp and no wind to make it choppy. During the middle of the week we have the lake all to ourselves. Being a Master Mechanic (as far as the AMA knows), I was able to keep the boats running and we had a good time with them. What would the river be without mechanical problems anyway? For my entire life our family has gone to Lake Havasu and every time we (the men) spend hours standing around the stern of one of the boats working on something. I think if nothing broke we would break something just so we could continue this family ritual.......There are so many Supercross stories to tell. I will probably recap you guys every now and then......In Detroit Sue and I got a rental car with a GPS so when Erv Braun asked if I had directions to Trijicon I told him I didn't need them, I had the address and the GPS would guide us in. All was going well right up until the point where the Freeway we were on decided to turn into rubble......Detour......Holy crap we were in the depths of the Detroit ghetto and the GPS kept taking us in circles through some bad neighborhoods......Erv was getting a little nervous being a passenger in the eDub driven vehicle. Red lights looked green to me and I never stopped. U-Turns were common in heavy traffic. One way streets didn't exist. All I could think of was Ted Nugent saying "Detroit, the murder capitol of the world" on Double Live Gonzo". I haven't had a traffic ticket in 25 years (all thought I've been pulled over at least 25 times) and didn't care if I got one that day or 10, I just wanted out of where we were. Detour signs would take us through really bad neighborhoods and it felt like a setup. Finally I saw an Officer and I pulled him over! Right in the middle of a busy street we sat side by side blocking traffic. "Officer, I am an out of town Fireman and I'm lost, we need to get to Wixom" We sat there blocking traffic for 5 minutes as the Officer explained how to get out of the area and onto a freeway that wasn't under construction. We finally made it to Wixom, Michigan the home of Trijicon. Trijicon was a major sponsor of the Supercross effort this season. What a cool place, if you are into hunting or shooting thugs (even with rubber bullets) you should check into the Trijicon sights. Trijicon offers a 50% discount to FPMXers so take advantage of this great offer. Detroit is a cool city. Way better than I was expecting. At night live bands play outside of the bars. Sue and I were able to sit in our hotel and look South into Canada. That's right, Detroit is North of Canada.....Weird........The hotel we stayed in was a city in it's self with a mall, theater and many restaurants. Yeah Detroit City is the place to be, it was such a madhouse I could hardly get next to myself...........Oh and thank you to all the Officers who took pity on me and didn't write those traffic tickets..............e

5-9-07    Supercross is over for 2007 and it was a wonderful experience. I was able to attend every race. At times it was tough, especially once the East Coast swing started but I enjoyed the entire season. Four of the rounds are within an hour of the FPMX estate in Carlsbad, Ca. and three more are within close driving distance, Phoenix, San Francisco and Las Vegas. That is the easy part. I did most of the shopping and cooking for the team so being in foreign cities sometimes gets a little nerve racking while trying to locate places to get supplies. Next year will be way easier because of the experience of this season. Anaheim and San Diego are no brainers. A visit to COSTCO by the house and we are good to go. But some cities were a pain in the butt. Here is my report card on each city.

Anaheim:
Pits: Electric, decent location to stadium, lots of fans
Stadium: Nice stadium, poor Industry seating
Stadium location: Great, right in the middle of So Cal, many airports to chose from, John Wayne very close.
Food: Not bad, Carls Jr., Panda Express, Hot dogs and regular stadium food.
City: It’s Anaheim, grew up near by so no big deal.

Phoenix:
Pits: Bad location, no awnings, packed with fans, hard to get anywhere because of the crowds
Stadium: Awesome, retractable roof, pretty good Industry seating area
Stadium location: Down town Phoenix, nice area, hard to park anywhere
Food: Friday’s rules but hard to get into. Pizza, Mexican and stadium food
City: Uhh, ok. Bad sports teams.

San Francisco:
Pits: Outdoor, a little remote but nice. On the bay, wide open
Stadium: Very nice, Industry seating is pretty good
Stadium location: Sits on the bay, parking sucks, don’t bring a motor home.
Food: Garlic fries and huge burgers, air smells of garlic
City: Unique, fun to visit.

Houston:
Pits: Outdoor pits near stadium but not near stadium entrance, a bit of a walk.
Stadium: One of the nicest on the tour
Stadium location: opposite side of town from airport, near shopping areas and grocery stores
Food: good food upstairs. I don’t sit in the rider area for this race. Good seats above.
City: No reason to visit unless we are racing there.

San Diego:
Pits: Sloped and segregated. Outdoor. Gas cans have to be in cache . Have to push bike to fuel it. Wide open, good fan access
Stadium: Old but still ok, pretty good Industry seating but packed.
Stadium location: Freeway close, good eating places near by.
Food: Same old same old….hot dogs
City: Nice, great weather

Atlanta:
Pits: Awesome, Indoors and packed with fans.
Stadium: Nice basic stadium
Stadium location: Near downtown, nowhere to get food. No grocery stores in the entire city. Don’t eat at the Varsity
Food: basic
City: Probably won’t go there for anything but racing.

Daytona:
Pits: on the speedway track side by side for half a mile. Not bad but far from action, no industry seating. Horrible for watching from industry side. Stadium seats are way old but you can see the action
Stadium: Awesome just because of the history, actually sucks.
Stadium location: Right in the middle of Daytona bike week, busy with street bikers
Food: Did the Costco thing. Didn’t eat any of the stadium food so don’t know
City: Too many bikers. Spring break might be a reason to go (26 years ago).

Orlando:
Pits: Outdoors and near the stadium
Stadium: Old
Stadium location: Bad part of town. Don’t wonder too far from pits or stadium
Food: Pretty good BBQ’s going on in stadium
City: Bring money. Too many tourist traps but a nice place.

Indianapolis:
Pits: Closed pits, no fans allowed. Worst this year.
Stadium: Basic football dome, ok
Stadium location: Down town, nice area. Drive 10 miles for groceries.
Food: Basic stuff
City: Ok

St. Louis:
Pits: Indoors, much like Atlanta
Stadium: Nice near arch
Stadium location: Bad area of town once you get away from the stadium
Food: Basic
City: Don’t leave the stadium without a weapon

Dallas:
Pits: Outdoors, much like Anaheim without the electricity in the air
Stadium: Old
Stadium location: Freeway close
Food: Basic
City: Pretty nice, green

Detroit:
Pits: Closed, random placement around stadium
Stadium: Nice, next to Tiger stadium
Stadium location: Downtown
Food:  Tasty burgers but messy.
City: Way better than I expected. Could be a lot of fun. Gonna lose your mind in Detroit Rock City

Seattle:
Pits: The best, right at the entrance to the stadium
Stadium: Nice stadium
Stadium location: On the Sound, downtown Seattle
Food: I cooked, never ate stadium food
City: Freaks walking the streets, much like SF. Nice area, Smells like fish. Too many one way streets.

Las Vegas:
Pits: Awesome, fan filled, lot’s of room. A bit of a walk to the stadium.
Stadium: Old. Basic college football stadium
Stadium location: East of the strip. A little remote but ok. Lot’s of traffic back to town
Food: We had Hawaiian food for the Gonzalez family, never tried the stadium food.
City: I don’t remember anything that happened there.

5-2-07    This weekend is round 16 of the AMA Supercross Series, so far I have been to every round. Tomorrow morning Sue and I are driving the FPMX AMSOIL motor home up the 15 to Vegas for the final round. Tomorrow night we are going to see Marc Savard do his hypnotist show. We are going with Erv Braun and his better half, Winn. I am really tempted to try to be hypnotized but don't want to get injured on stage. Last time I attempted such a feat I kept falling to the floor. I have been released to go to work on May 7th. That's just in time to take several shifts off to go to the Lake Havasu on the annual family vacation. I am really looking forward to that break from work.......Actually I haven't been there since Sept 24th, 2006. My knee is feeling pretty good but I am going to take the summer off of the bike. I need to work for a while and give AFLAC a break. Plus I need to get some overtime in so I can afford a new bike. I am leaning Orange or Green right now. I think I'll do some Dual Sport and make my racing come back at the Christmas GP in the Ironman class. At least that is the plan right now........I have to tell you that I am glad that I won't be hitting the friendly skies for a while. I am dealing with my 4th cold of the year. Four colds in 5 months......I normally, maybe get one cold every three years so this killing me but I am pretty much over this cold. I guess I'll have to turn on the Shape-O-Meter next week. I'm not looking forward to seeing where I register on it. Oh well I need to pack for Vegas............e

4-25-07    I have to say that watching the 40-99 Intermediate class was a little difficult for me at Rounds 3 & 4.....I really don't know what is wrong with me other than I have MX+ Blood flowing through my veins. I will be going back to work next week after a lot of rehab on my right knee and all I can think of is racing. My plans have been to stay away from the track and get into some Dual Sport riding for a year or so and then make a comeback for the Fifty Plus class(s) but I don't know if I can take it. I should know better. A reasonable person would stay away from motocross, heck even motorcycles for a while or ever but........I CAN'T HELP MYSELF. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing but it's what it is. I never planned on being a motocrosser. Actually I figured that I would be a golfer in my old age but I don't even own a golf club. My dad has like 12 sets so I'm good to go if I ever get the itch to walk the links. I have come to realize that motocross has a direct effect on my happiness. When I don't ride I get bitter and life just isn't as good. The best word to describe life without motocross is "Miserable". I get into a funk when I don't get to ride. Oh I've been OK for the last several months while rehabbing but the better I feel physically the worse I feel motoically (new word). Now I have a huge decision to make.....KAWASAKI KXF 450 for moto or KTM 525 EXC for Dual Sport......You know what's kind of weird?.......The longer I stay away from motocross the faster I feel....I don't get it. But right now I feel like I could podium in my class but reality tells me that I have a long way to got to stay up with those guys. All I know is that I crave MX right now. I know that at rounds 5 & 6 I am going to go through withdrawals but I have decided to work for a while and get into better shape before I throw a leg over a new bike. You know what's weird is that today is the first day that I have really felt this since my injury. And not having a bike in the garage is freaking me out. I feel like that little kid growing up in Downey, CA collecting pop bottles and saving every penny to buy my first bike. It took me 2 years to save the money but at 10 years old I bought a 3HP Briggs and Stratton mini bike. Gas was .25 a gallon, I would ride that thing in my front yard until she ran out of fuel then push it to the Sunland Gas Station, fill 'er up and ride it home. At the time I never thought about it but the neighbors must have loved me. Thirty eight years latter and I still can't get enough.....e

4-11-07    The snowball effect is killing me. Last week I told you about Sue wanting the new camera and we ended up coming home with a surround sound receiver......Remember? Yeah well all was going fine, the instilation guy came by and hooked up all the wires. I know my limitations and wiring the system was beyond me. The system rocks. I highly recommend getting one. So now we have exposed wires running to the speakers. So I decide to put up some crown molding to cover the wires. Ok let's face it. I'm not a electronics guy and I'm not a finish carpenter. I'm a Fireman and a race promoter.....GOSH! So I've wasted the last two days putting up this crown molding.....Crown molding hangs on a 45* between the ceiling and the wall then you have inside and outside 45* angles in the corners. I'm doing this with 15 foot pieces by myself. The cuts have to be precise. I am so glad that I am doing this with white crown molding that I am going to paint instead of the oak that I wanted to use. I am so grateful for wall board compound. I am somewhat of an artist. So today was basically an art day filling in the gaps between the non precise cuts and wrong angles and crap work. By Friday my artistic abilities should overcome my lack of carpentry work and everything should look fine. It just takes so long for THICK wall board compound patches to dry enough to sand and mold into the shape of crown molding.........Which brings me to this saying....."If you want something done right and you are a loser carpenter, pay someone else to do it"........e

4-8-07    YZ Ernie is a source of entertainment for me. Here's the start of an IM session we just had........

FirePoliceMX [11:44 P.M.]:  God created fire stations so cops would have a place to nap...........my new t-shirt
Yzernie [11:44 P.M.]:  "real men don't stage" - my new shirt
Yzernie [11:45 P.M.]:  :-D
FirePoliceMX [11:45 P.M.]:  Smart men let cops clear the scene
Yzernie [11:46 P.M.]:  Sissies wait behind the big red truck
FirePoliceMX [11:46 P.M.]:  Cops wake firemen up when they could have handled the accident without them
Yzernie [11:47 P.M.]:  firemen sleep while real men keep them safe
FirePoliceMX [11:48 P.M.]:  Cops need to learn to clean toilets because they use ours more than we do
Yzernie [11:48 P.M.]:  firemen should lock their doors
Yzernie [11:48 P.M.]:  :-D
FirePoliceMX [11:49 P.M.]:  real cops should wear blue uniforms
Yzernie [11:49 P.M.]:  the boys in blue are tried and true, but, the mark of a man is the green and tan
FirePoliceMX [11:50 P.M.]:  Sounds like a jailer
Yzernie [11:50 P.M.]:  hahahahaha
Yzernie [11:50 P.M.]:  so, how are ya?
FirePoliceMX [11:50 P.M.]:  Good, you?

4-6-07    I understand my wife making fun of YZ Ernie, he deserves it. But why take a shot at me? Actually I have come to realize that the sole function of  "Inside the FPMX" is to make fun of me. That's all good but I feel like I'm hog tied and being beat on with Billy clubs  by my friends who didn't pass the Fire test and became Police Officers. It's not worth fighting back with Sue, I will lose. All you married guys know what I'm talking about...........It's kind of weird to be at home today. Friday has been my travel day to the Supercrosses races for the last thirteen weekends. Actually it feels pretty nice to get a break. I was thinking about heading over to the airport later today just so I wouldn't go through withdrawals but decided to go to the movies instead and ask a couple of people if I could have one of them move over so I could sit in the seat between them and hold my elbows and knees in. I'll share popcorn with them. That should get it out of my system for the weekend.........We are just over a week out from Glen Helen, I'm doing OK knowing that I am just a promoter for that event but looking at the Pre-Entries for the 40+ Intermediate class kind of hurt. I'm sure watching that race will mess me up a little. I remember a few years ago watching my class race and feeling like I should be out there. The weird thing is that they look so slow and I know I can beat them all. But the reality of it all is I must look just as slow when I'm out there. I'm glad I can't watch myself race.............e

4-3-07    For those of you who have been around the FPMX for more than a couple of years you will probably remember the "Mullet Review" on FirePoliceMX.com. I received several emails from FPMXers, family members and people who I had no idea how they knew about the "Mullet Review" asking were it was. I started to feel bad about making fun of people so took it down. But I'm starting to re-think the "Mullet Review". I can't believe how many mullets are still out there. It's really fair game, they should know better. Last week in Dallas I sat down to watch to watch the mains behind a woman and low and behold a She-mullet. So I think I will start a new "Mullet Review" for your FirePoliceMX.com roaming pleasure................Yesterday Sue and I wandered into Best Buy, she wanted to check out some new Canon camera. The camera was out of stock so I figured that I just dodged a financial bullet. Not so, soon we found ourselves in the Audio room and Sue suggested that we get a surround sound system for the house. We've established that I like good movies so this wasn't such a bad idea. The system with installation was $1500.  Ouch, I like movies but do I like them $1500 worth? Soon I remembered a day a few years ago when I bought some new surround sound speakers from some guy for $100. He said that they weren't hot, I touched them, they felt cool so I bought them. So all we would need is the receiver. A few minutes later I told Sue that I could hang the speakers myself and save some money there. We got out of Best Buy for under $600. That included a guy from the Geek Squad coming over and hooking everything up.........Wow what a difference.....I'm watching "The greatest game ever played" as I write here in the FPMX Journal. It's like a whole new movie. Man I can't wait to watch Joe Dirt and Tombstone again. Maybe I should try Hope Floats with the surround sound.......No it would still be Hope Floats, the worst movie ever made.........Oh, Top Gun, yeah...................e

3-29-07    I like movies. So when Sue asked me to go to the movies today I said ok without hesitation. I also know that I need to spend time with my wife away from my now normal everyday life of FPMX and Supercross stuff. It's nice to turn off the cell phone and kick back with some popcorn, Milk Duds and a large Diet Coke every once in a while. I like to go to the theater during the middle of the day on a week day to avoid the crowds. I hate it when people talk during a movie, especially on a cell phone........If you have been reading the FPMX Journal for very long you will know that the worst movie ever made (imho) was Hope Floats. It's a given, everybody knows that. I am so glad that I didn't have any razor blades with me when I had to sit through that epic. I don't think that Sandra Bullock was the problem, I think the script just sucked. But after what I just went through today I might have to re-think why Hope Floats rated a 0 on the 1-10 scale. Yes today's blockbuster was another Sandra Bullock film called "Premonition". Save yourselves. Women please make sure that your husband don't have any sharp objects in their pockets if you chose to waste precious money on this piece of ......uh, Film. I can tell you that the theater had 27 rows, there were two exits up front on each side and there were Three lamps on each wall. There was seven other people in the theater, one mom's hair looked like a mullet from the back but wasn't a mullet. As you can see I was bored to death. I'm actually looking forward to the middle seat tomorrow morning on the way to Dallas. If I am sandwiched in between two fat guys with bad breath talking to each other it will be better than what I just went through. I like good movies......................e

3-26-07    Wow what a night, I got seven hours of sleep last night, that equals what I got over the prior three days. This morning my alarm went off at 7am, I had an appointment with my new physical therapist. We did a lot of stretching, lunges and balance exercises. It didn't seem like it was too hard but I did break a pretty good sweat. When I got home I decided to get on the internet before taking a shower. I was on the couch with my laptop for about an hour when I decided to get up and go up stairs. My legs were gone! I had to use the hand rail to get up the stairs. Sue was watching me and in a sarcastic voice said "Are You Kidding Me?" I have a ways to go still. Tonight things are a little better and I can go up and down the stairs fine but I can tell that my legs have been worked............Supercross is winding down a little and it's time to get ready for the FPMX Nationals in a few weeks. I am really looking forward to Glen Helen. It will be a nice change of pace to go hangout with everyone in the FPMX family. I will miss being out there banging bars with you guys. There's nothing like sitting on the starting line, looking to your left and seeing your buddies then looking to your right and seeing more buddies. Then turning your attention to Marco as he points to each rider to make sure you are ready for the start of the moto. As Marco reaches the end of the line on the far left side of the gate and starts to make his way to the box.....Oh man......clutch in, clicking into second gear, throttle rolling on.......anticipation.......waiting, inching forward, waiting.......come on..........come on.........GATE DROPS......Look to your left......nobody, look to your right......nobody.............yeah baby, HOLESHOT!...........e

3-23-07    Planes, trains and automobiles...........Uh, and rental cars. I am sitting in the lobby of the Radisson by the Indianapolis Airport right now waiting for Rich Eggett to get here. He was stranded in Cincinnati and had to take a cab from there to Indy. We can't check into the hotel room until Rich arrives. Hannig picked me up from the airport and dropped me off, his brother is in town and he is visiting him right now. There's some Cheerleader convention here and so it is really noisy in the lobby. On my connecting flight from San Diego I didn't recognize anyone from SX. I had the window seat. With all the flying that I have been doing I lost track of where I was going. I knew I was heading for Indy but didn't have a clue where my connecting flight was. It is usually Phoenix but we were in the air a long time. It was cloudy so I couldn't see anything on the ground. My ticket was folded around gum and thus tossed in the trash bag when the flight attendant came by collecting. I had been dosing off while listening to my ipod. We were in the air a long time and I knew it wasn't a direct flight......"Ummm lady sitting next to me in the middle seat, where are we flying to?" ....... I got the "Your kidding me" look......."Chicago" "O'Hare or Midway?" "O'Hare" "Thank you".............conversation over. It was a pretty good conversation though. She found out that I was an idiot and I found out that she thought that I was an idiot.......While waiting for my 32 minute flight to Indianapolis I bumped into Keith Johnson. Prior to that I was thinking that I was flying to Indy on the wrong weekend. I usually see a ton of SX people on these flights.......Freakin' more cheerleaders keep registering at the desk. It's loud in the lobby. We need mime cheerleaders. Anyway as I was sitting on the American Eagle Jet I looked up and saw "The Man" coming down the isle. I said hello, he said hello back. I knew that I was on the right plane now......I'm hungry, Hannig is at his brothers hotel, I was invited but declined to write this article. Rich is somewhere between Cinci and Indy in a cab confessing......Oh, just found out that it's a girls Volleyball convention. We need mime volleyball tournaments.....I'll let you know how things go here in Indy........Indy right?............yeah Indy.............e

3-22-07    I had my two days home and now it's back to Lindberg Field tomorrow AM to catch a plane to Indianapolis for Round 12 of the amp'd Supercross Series. On Wednesday I had my Doctors appointment. Everything is going good. Next week I start to work with a trainer to build the strength in my right leg. My ortho Doc was concerned that the S-O-M was turned off. He said that I need to get in the 12th BSOML. He was also concerned that YZ Ernie was in the 16.7th BSOHL. I assured him that YZ E would be ok, he was just getting back on the bike and it takes a while to get back to normal. Well not normal but back to where YZ E was before his injury.......Speaking of YZ E.......He writes a pretty good column, I like reading his stuff. Mark Davenport also has some interesting things to say but I've just about had it with that Sue chick. Every time I do something questionable she tells me that she's going to write about it on "Inside the FPMX". Luckily for me she hardly ever writes........or reads what I write. I actually had a new found respect for MD03, while he was off the bike for 30 months he continued to do his Diary. It's hard to find stuff to write about when you don't get to the track and put in some laps.........Yesterday my Ortho Doc asked me if I have been riding.........Uh, I wish.....but...NO. Not until I get back to work and put some time in there. Plus I don't even own a motorcycle, not a 50, not a vintage.....not nothing, no bikes at all......weird. I would even settle for a YAMAHA right now. I'm sorry that I am rambling on here and wasting your time but without throwing a leg over a bike for six months I kind of have nothing to talk about......Hey the dirt at Perris was awesome today. Glen Helen had some big ruts and the wind blew. Starwest changed a section, it took a while to learn it but I finally got it. There were some pros at the track. Rich Swisher looked really fast today...........OK, wow, I feel like I actually rode. It was nice talking about moto again.....My forearms are feeling it big time...........My flight leaves at 6:15 am.......Good night..........e

3-18-07    I want t go home. I have been home one day in the last three weeks. The last two weeks have been spent in Florida. Last night was the Orlando Supercross. The riders have been continuing to improve. All four KTM Lites riders made the night show. Carlos Gonzalez, Kevin Rookstool and Tyler Kalisiak  were all in the first heat with Eric Nye in the second heat. In heat one Kalisiak made a pass on Mike Alessi half way through the second lap, they both hit a triple together and made contact. Kalisiak went down hard and was ran over by 5 riders. It was hard to watch. I really believe the RXR Chest protector saved Tyler from serious trauma. Tyler ended up with a fractured tail bone. That is the word that I got last night. If I find out more I will let you know. There was nothing the following riders could do to avoid riding over Tyler. Carlos did a good job of avoiding his teammate and ended up going down too. In the LCQ Eric Nye settled into 4th place and Kevin Rookstook made his way to 5th but could not catch his teammate. Eric went to the main and got a 15th while Kevin earned the Gas Card ($250). The most improved rider of the week was Carlos Gonzalez. Who qualified 26th after not qualifying in the previous East Coast races. Each week Carlos has gotten closer. In Daytona he missed the night show by one spot qualifying 41st. Sue Missed the Daytona event but flew in on Tuesday for Orlando. We went to Disney World on Wednesday and visited the Magic Kingdom. It's a lot like Disneyland but not as good. First off.....No Matterhorn.......What gives? Then Main Street is much shorter with less shops and the Small World entrance is like walking into a building off some public sidewalk, unlike the much better California entrance to the Small World after all. It's a smaller Small World after all. The entire Disney World complex is beautiful and huge. It has it's own freeways. On my flight to Orlando I was a window seat guy on Jet Blue. I had my own TV........cool. It was a 5 hour flight but it only seemed like 5 hours (Most fights seem much longer than the actual time). I had a layover in New York at JFK, on my fight from NY to Orlando I had my own row, 3 TV's.....I didn't want that flight to end. That flight seemed too short. It was only 2.5 hours, seemed like just over an hour......I see more Jet Blue in my future..........It's been almost three weeks since I last wrote so I will try to remember some of the funny things that have gone on an write about them soon...............e

3-1-07    I just read Davenport's Diary. Mark mentioned how everyone asks him about the Supercross team. The Supercross thing is kind of a funny thing, funny as in weird, difficult, fun, frustrating, rewarding, sheer misery, challenging and much more. I enjoy it and at the same time wonder what the heck is going on. One thing about this season is that we have a great group of people on the team. I have attended the Motorcycle Trade Expo in Indianapolis for the last three years. This year was way different from the previous years. Everyone that I talked to was aware of the All American KTM / FirePoliceMX.com team. They knew who our riders were and how they were doing. And every company that I talked to was 100% more interested in the team than they were the last two years. They were aware of our amateur series and also the boys in Ohio and Indiana. Even people in other fields than motocross knew of our team and riders. It opened my eyes to a lot of things. First off, I have felt this for a while but Indy confirmed it. Our team, OUR team, you and every other Firefighter of Law Enforcement officer out there. Our team is very marketable. If I didn't believe that with all my heart I would give up on all of this. We have millions of built in fans. Our team is doing better this season, we are making main events. Tell me, are you guys pulling for Joe Oehlhof, Dennis Jonon, Anthony Charette, Dennis Ewing, Kevin Rookstool, Carlos Gonzalez, Tyler Kalisiak and Eric Nye? I hope you are. Why should you? Because they represent us, they represent you, Cops and Firemen around the world. Sponsors have got to eat that up. No other team out their has so many "Built in fans". These 'Built in fans" all have great jobs and spend a lot of money....................Duh!   It's a win win for the companies who support the All American KTM / FirePoliceMX.com Supercross team. I just want to thank the companies who are helping us get through the season.

All American KTM, Braun Entertainment, Risk911.com, Team BCB, Trijicon, Miller Motorsports Park and Kingdom Apparel, KTM motorcycles, Oneal gear, XS energy drinks, Leo Vince Pipes, FMF pipes, Motorex oils, Renthal bars and chains, RXRprotect.com, Dunlop tires, K&N air filters, Universal, Crower Cams, Precision concepts suspensions, BCB Equipment Rentals, Wantta 1 tailgate products, Weapon MX products, Kingdomcrown.com, Risk racing stands, Lock Jaw, , Zing graphics and Jake Kidd.

Wait until the 2008 season, we're kicking butt! Heck it's already here, we've been working on 2008 since January 6th.............Please tell your friends who are looking to spend some advertising money about your team. Let's make a statement in 2008!!!..........e

2-27-07    I don't know what is going on, I just got my third cold over the last 4 months. I have narrowed it down to 3 things. (1) Going to therapy and laying on tables where others have been. Even though I see them clean the tables after every patient. I think that when people are screaming, face down in a pillow that the germs make it past the pillowcase into the pillow. Then with the new pillowcase, the next victim/patient inhales germs from the screamer before him and before her and before him. (2) Airplane travel. Being stuck in a tube at 32,000 feet for 4 hours with strangers breathing the same air, people sneezing, coughing, etc. (3) Not being able to ride a motorcycle because of a knee injury. I don't know what "3" has to do with a cold but I'm going to try to make it make sense somehow so I can justify getting back on a bike a little sooner than later....... My first cold of the series kicked my butt, it lasted two weeks and during that time Kleenex stock shot through the roof. The second cold was half of the first and wasn't a big deal, I'm hoping this one is just passing through like John Rambo was just passing through town before Will Teasle gave Rambo a lift out of town. Anyway I've just about had it with colds.........e

6-07    I have just about had enough of this flying crap. I figured out yesterday that when I travel with Sue I'm the middle seat guy. Even if my ticket says "Window" or "Isle" I get the middle seat. If I haven't said it before, and I think I have..........I HATE THE MIDDLE SEAT! Take yesterday for example. My ticket from Atlanta to Phoenix (3 hours 55 minute flight) says Row 15 A and Sue's says Row 15 B. Somehow I get B. The guy next to me somehow owned the rights to the arm rest. Every time he moved his arm I tried to get some real estate back but he had no problem with the arm touching arm thing. And he also had one leg in the isle and the other over my property line. So anyway it was a long flight. On the next leg from Phoenix to San Diego I sat next to a guy reading ALLURE magazine.......Come on. I was leaning away from that guy. I told Sue that we either sit in first class next season or we each get a window in different rows, I'm tired of the middle seat. I would do it this year but we have already bought the tickets for all the rounds. Live and learn.....I hate the middle seat.........e

2-20-07    Life is the perfect comedy, check this story out......Over the next couple of months I will be flying a lot to the EAST Coast SX races. I just figured that maybe I should get some practice in before it begins. Just before the Main Events at the San Diego SX, Brad Hannig and I headed to Lindberg field to catch a couple flights to Chicago and then Indianapolis for the Motorcycle Dealer Expo. I was on American Airlines and Brad was on Southwest. My plane was scheduled to depart at 11pm. I was in group 3 to board the plane, I saw this guy earlier with a Jack in the Box beanie on and long green hair hanging out of it. He was in group 3 also. I had a bad feeling that we would be neighbors. We were! He had the window seat and I had the isle in a two seat row. We were all boarded and full by 10:45 and left the gate early. We sat, waiting until 11:20, when we were told that the plane was over weight and we needed to take 8 people off the plane. So we go back to the gate and the 8 names were called to get off the plane. Two of the eight were in the row ahead of us. So the guy next to me with the Jack in the Box beanie and green hair asks me to let him out into the isle. He took the window seat in front of me......Score! So I slid over to the window seat happy as could be. It was going to be a long flight and I could use the room.....Then all of the sudden the pilot comes over the PA and says that the plane needs to be inspected because we taxied out over weight. A few minutes later the inspection was finished and we were ready to taxi out again.......WAIT! "I'm sorry, we are past curfew and will not be allowed to leave tonight but we will get you out tomorrow morning at 6:30" So we all got off the plane and stood in line for hotel vouchers. I'm only a half hour from home but figure that they need to put me up in a hotel. The line never moves. I was about 30 people back and the line hadn't budged in a half hour. "Ok, we decided to pay the fine, everyone back on the plane" So we were airborne by midnight. I took a little nap then looked up, the guy in the Jack in the Box beanie had switched beanies. Why do you need more than one beanie on a flight? After another hour long delay in Chicago I arrived in Indy and was like a zombie for the first day of the show. The show was good and we made a lot of good contacts over the two days that we were there. So back to the airport, Hannig on Southwest and I on Continental. Forty-five minute delay and we were in the air. Only problem was that I had an hour layover in Houston so time was going to be tight to get on the flight to San Diego. I got my 2 ounce Diet Coke with a full cup of ice. Two sips later I had a cup of ice on my little table hooked to the seat in front of me. No big deal, I had the window seat and didn't want to have to make a trip to the john anyway. Just before landing in Houston, I reached to turn off my ipod and tipped the ice water over, all of the water ended up on my crotch. Direct hit, looked like I peed my Levi's. It was a big spot about the size of a volleyball. The plane landed and I had to make a dash for the next plane through a crowded airport. I held my O'GIO back pack in front of my crotch and walked as fast as I could. I saw a bathroom and decided to do a pant change. The bathroom was full so I ducked into a stall with my two carry on bags. No room to change so I continued on my journey. I was one of the last to board the plane. My seat was in the last row and all the overhead bins were closed in the back so I had to put my O'GIO backpack and other carry on bag in the storage bins half way to the back exposing my wet crotch. Where was Billy Madison when I needed him? I had no choice but to walk fast with my hands open in front of the wet spot. My hands aren't that big. There was one seat left in the middle of the back row, everyone was looking at me. I didn't make eye contact. The guy in the isle seat stood up and I sat quickly sat and pulled the table out to cover my little accident........When Levi's get wet they don't hide the wet spot too good. The flight attendant wanted the table up before take off..........I was glad it was the second flight because I knew a lot of motorcycle industry people on the first flight. All I would need would be to have Donn snap a pic of that and put it in the "Add a caption" page of Transworld. I was probably the talk around the water coolers of San Diego today..........Next flight........Atlanta...........Hey look everybody, Billy peed his pants. Of course I peed my pants, everyone my age pees their pants. It's the coolest. Really? YES. You ain't cool, unless you pee your pants...............e

2-13-07   If you spend much time on the FPMX message board you probably have seen the phrase "Yeah I crack my self up too". That usually comes at the bottom of one of Mike "Walker" Dunn's posts (books). Yes Mike's fingers are long winded at times but it usually makes for some good reading with a little humor thrown in. I'm actually impressed that Mike has a computer, I imagine him on a manual typewriter for some reason. Anyway as I was working on the FPMX Action Figures page last night, I couldn't quit laughing. I laughed for over an hour straight. It was the most fun I have had in a while. I know someone might get offended and if so I'm sor..........no, get over it. You are only on that page because you matter to me and the FPMX. You are somewhat an FPMX celebrity (semi famous). Like Davenport, I too love the Glen Helen dog pic. I laughed at that for a while. Someone who isn't familiar with that dog might think that I made a mistake by putting a lion action figure picture up but those who know the animal understand.......Tomorrow is Valentines Day......I said that just to remind myself again. I once came home from work and forgot our anniversary. In the words of Julia Roberts in Pretty woman, "Big mistake, big, big mistake". So I sit on the brink of getting in trouble but I have a plan. I still have a few hours before "V" Day. Las Vegas has it at 3 to 5 that I will forget. I have researched the stores that I need to go to to stay out of trouble. I have a time picked out to accomplish the task at hand. Unless something goes really bad, everything should be ok and I will be able to sleep in the house tomorrow night...............Were going to be adding a new rider to the stable of "Lites" riders at the San Diego Supercross. Dennis Ewing will be on a KTM 250, switching from a HONDA. Dennis will be under the tent as a support rider and will finish out the West Coast series with the team. In a couple of weeks we will be heading to Atlanta with a whole new crop of "Lites" riders. Tyler Kalisiak, Carlos Gonzalez and Kevin Rookstool will be on All American KTM/ FirePoliceMX.com, O'NEAL KTM's with Eric Nye aboard a Canadian KTM as a support rider.............e out

2-12-07   Reminder to self: Self, whatever you do, don't forget to get Sue something for Valentines Day!..........The sad thing is that I'll forget anyway but at least I can show her this post in the FPMX Journal and she'll know I was thinking about her.........Yeah like that's gonna help.......We are getting right into the meat of the Supercross season. So far it has been pretty easy, like going to local races almost. Anaheim is just less than an hour from the FPMX Estate in beautiful Carlsbad, CA. Phoenix is a short drive, especially since we had our first two Nationals right after the SX races in Arizona at ACP. Then Anaheim, Frisco, Anaheim. So far it been almost like backyard races. The West Coast races are pretty easy to do but then all of the sudden we're not in Kansas anymore (Wizard of Oz). Kansas is also the home of Dennis Jonon #236, he's not in Kansas anymore either. Last weekend was the first real race away from the comforts of the FPMX Motorhome, AKA The Boardroom (Named by Gigi Frieling). Yes it was flight time. I'm sure over the next several weeks I will have had my fill of airports, middle seats, 2oz Diet Cokes, pretzels, lost luggage, strip searches, delayed flights, lost luggage and floating seat cushions but my first few flights have been pretty nice. Over the last few years I have noticed that your first flight might have one or two people from supercross on it, riders, mechanics or sponsor reps but the connecting flights after a layover are jam packed with those types. I ran into Danny Lowers in Phoenix, we had the same flight to Houston. As I was sitting in my window seat with nobody in the middle seat (YES!), I saw Joe Oehlhof and his mechanic, Gerald Leighton come on the plane. I never saw them come past the curtain to second class. Are you kidding me? Son of a gun, I have never sat in first class........someday. Ryan Villapoto, Randy Lawrence, Mike Byer and a few other faces that I recognized also made it past the curtains. The flights were uneventful and I met Brad Hannig at the Budget car rental place where he had been waiting for a little over an hour for me to arrive. By the time we got to Reliant Stadium, Greggo already had the awning up (YES!). As usual I dressed for California weather and froze all weekend. I tried to dress warmer but I left all my warm race/team clothes in the Boardroom. I decided to pack for this trip after the RV storage lot was closed for the night. It's not like I have a lot of orange jackets laying around the house. I took an FPMX sweatshirt but that really didn't do the trick. Anthony Charette #319 was ill and stayed home this weekend. We hope Anthony can get well for his home town race in San Diego next weekend.  Joe Oehlhof  #115 got out of the gate fast in his qualifier and also the LCQ but had problems before the first turn and had to work his way forward but didn't make it to the Supercross main event. Dennis Jonon was able to transfer out of his qualifier and rode well to finish 13th in the Lites main event. That moved Dennis from 21st in the points to 18th and kept him in the hunt for the East/West Shootout in Las Vegas on My 5th. That is the anniversary of the day that our ship carrying all that mayonnaise sank off the coast of Porto Vallarta........Thirteenth is a best so far for Dennis. He and his mechanic, Jeremy have been doing a great job..........After the races, taking down the awning and putting everything away we decided to grab something to eat. Only problem was everything was closed, everything but Taco Cabana. Taco Cabana was like a Supercross reunion. All the fans were long gone and the place was filled up by guys who just took awnings down. The food was pretty good but the story telling was better. It was pit racing at it's finest. Brad and I made it to our Hotel room about 2:30am, our flights were early so we only a few hours of sleep (Brad 3 - me -2, Brad was snoring). I was pretty tired when going through airport security and forgot to take my watch off. After backing up, putting the watch through the scanner and walking back through the metal detector for a second time, the buzzer went off again. Dang, I forgot my cell phone in my cell phone pocket of my pants. So I decided to back up and try again........Too late, second time is the charm........Strip search! While being detained and searched, half of the AMA and Live Nation employees decided to walk past. Awesome looks good for the FPMX, no weapons or drugs were found. As I walked on the plane there was Joe Oehlhof sitting in first class again. What gives? He said it was from lots of frequent flyer miles and they just bump him up from the general population. I sat next to Gerald on the flight from Houston to Phoenix, he had the window and I had the isle with nobody in-between. We both slept most of the way. Half way through the flight the 2 ounces of Diet Coke made it's way through my body and I needed to get rid of it so I staggered to the rear of the plane to the restrooms. In the back row I saw Danny Lowers asleep in a row by himself. My first thought was to wake him up by doing something to him but better judgment got a hold of me, I didn't want to do anything stupid or childish. After exiting the restroom I toilet papered him like a mature adult and returned to my seat. The flight from Phoenix to San Diego had me in the middle seat. I hate the middle seat. But it was only an hour so it wasn't too bad. How am I going to do this next year when I have a real job again? Six more weeks and I am back to work. By the way they are kicking my butt in therapy these days but it's needed. Oh yeah, note to self: Whatever you do, don't forget to get Sue something for Valentines Day!...........e

2-6-07    Every time that I think that therapy isn't doing me any good anymore and think that I don't need to go, I get worked by one of my many physical therapists. Now they have me doing a ton of squats, no weight but hundreds of squats. Therapy is my new home away from home. I actually enjoy it. I like the people there, not just the therapists but the other patients. After 3 months of this I have gotten to know many of the others getting their bodies back in shape and ready to enter the working force again. When I first started going to therapy I was barley able to function, now they have me jogging in place on a trampoline and actually breaking a sweat. I was called an over achiever, that was a first for me.............Supercross and life has kept me very busy while away from work, take for instance yesterday. I had to drive to Hahm Motorsports and pick up the "Spark & Arrester" mascot costumes that Hahm used at Supercross and Monster Jam. Then I had to go to work and and pick up a uniform shirt and my badge, drive to L.A. and get picture taken for my new I.D. card.  Then drive back to the station and drop off the badge and shirt. From there I drove to the Inland Empire (I.E.) to drop off the team pit shirts at the screenprinter/embroiderer to add some logos. Then I drove farther into the I.E. to meet Greggo and drop off the Mascots so they could be loaded on the race hauler that was getting ready to leave for Houston for the Supercross. Greggo was hungry so I took him to dinner. He was waiting for an appointment to get some electrical work fixed on the rig the next morning (today) and get some new tires on the trailer. The starter motor for the generator also went out so I took it home with me to get a new one or get this one fixed. I got home around 8pm. From then until bed time I was on the internet trying to find a place that deals with starter motors on heavy equipment. I never found anything. So this morning I drove to Pep Boys, I knew that they wouldn't carry this part but might be able to point me in the right direction. They pointed me in a direction alright but not the right one. After a few more stops I was told to go to a small building on a back street in Oceanside, Richer Auto & Truck Electric. After 4 hours of going from shop to shop and following several leads, I knew I had walked into the right place. On the counter sat several similar sized starter motors. As I unwrapped the starter motor from the "Best in the Desert" T-Shirt that I had it wrapped in the man behind the counter, Jim, started rattling off some serial numbers. The numbers were not exactly right but he was close. His son, Jim, said that they would have to rebuild the motor. I asked how long it would take. I was nervous that we might not have electric for Houston. That would mean no lights and the lift gate on the back of the rig wouldn't work. It would mean trouble. Jim the younger said that he could have it repaired in a few days or maybe tomorrow. I told him that I needed it by Thursday because I had to meet our rig in Houston for the weekend. I was asked what was going on in Houston. I said Supercross. Jim the younger lit up. He had been to the Phoenix SX and was going to the San Diego SX in two weeks. We talked for a few minutes about the team when Jim the younger told me he could have the starter motor ready to go in two hours......Score! I will pick it up tomorrow and fly it with me to Houston. I sure hope everything turns out OK and we have electric this weekend...........The SX team is really coming along. It has been running very smooth this season. We have a great group of individuals working together to make this team. It is a lot of fun this year. Way better than the five previous years that FPMX has been racing Supercross..............My right Jello thigh is starting to get some muscle. It's still not close to being equal to my left thigh but it has been getting stronger and my surgeon says that I should recover 100% in time. I am scheduled to go back to work at the end of next month. My goal is to be 93.7% by them..........Therapy in the morning.................e

1-21-07    So last time that we chatted was just before the Phoenix Supercross and Rounds 1 & 2 of the FirePoliceMX.com Nationals. The Phoenix SX was a step forward for the team. At PHX the pits are so small that they do not allow awnings off the semis and half of the privateer teams get stuck on the back row behind the other privateer teams. This was the first year that we were able to get front row parking and it makes a huge difference in promoting our sponsors. For the second week in a row all three riders made the night show with Dennis Jonon making it to the main and taking 16th. Again Joe Oehlhof and Anthony Charette suffered from bad starts and were not able to make up enough spots to advance to the main events. Factory KTM stepped up their support of the team and provided us Works shocks, carburators and ignition systems to start using at A-2 next week. Things are going very well for the team. This is by far the best situation the Fire/Police Supercross team has been in since the beginning in 2002. All American KTM is doing a great job with the bikes..............After the SX Sue and I moved the Boardroom (motor home) to ACP to get ready for the Fire & Police MX Nationals Rounds 1 & 2. The usually "Perfect" winter AZ weather decided to act like we were in Chicago. Waking up to 18* temps in the morning were tough, especially when you only brought your So Cal clothes. A few days before the weekend began I started to come down with my second cold/fever of this winter. SO I didn't feel good during the entire event and the two t-shirts, two sweat shirts and jacket weren't enough to keep me warm. Not to mention that we were at my favorite race track and all I could do was watch. Yes it was tough! But the event was good, we had a good turnout this year. Each year the ACP race draws more people from Arizona to the FPMX. I want to thank Damien Lys and all those from the Prescott area for continuing to recruit and fill the starting line. I think that ACP went off well and I am looking forward to another great event at Glen Helen in April.........After the drive home from ACP I took a couple of days to recoup and work on the "Boardroom". You know stuff like wash her, change the oil in the generator and add fresh AMSOIL, clean her out and get ready for A-2. Oh yeah I almost forgot, I don't know if you remember but a year or so ago I wrote about getting my license plates in the mail from the DMV. We were issued 5NRD880.......There was no way I was going to put that on my ride, my home away from home. I didn't want her to be known as the Nerd Mobile. So for the last year and a half we sported the paper license plates that came on the motor home when we bought it. Last week we received our personalized license plates......FPMXCEO. I thought it was appropriate for the "Boardroom"............Then I started to think........hummmmmm.........From now on anyone who gets personalized plates on their vehicle that read "FPMX - then their 3 digit number" Example FPMX522, get a free gate pass for life. All you have to do is have that license plate on the vehicle that you are driving through the gate.............So A-2 was last night. Things went well, once again we had all three riders qualify for the night show. That's a big deal. First off it means that all riders will get paid, it also mans that our sponsors will be represented during the night time qualifying races in front of the crowd. Anthony Charette's bike was having some issues during qualifying, he made the cut but never really had a chance to dial some sections of the track in and didn't qualify for the main. Dennis Jonon was riding in a qualifying position when he was knocked down in a corner by Josh Hill. Dennis said that it wasn't Josh's fault but the rider in front of Josh didn't double and Josh had to move over on Dennis to avoid the rider in front of him. Dennis didn't qualify for the "Lites" main for the fist time this season. Joe Oehlhof was riding well on his KTM 450 with the new works parts and was comfortably making his way into the Supercross Main Event when his wheels were taken out from under him by Heath Voss who was also going to qualify easily for the main. It was an unfortunate happening for Joe and the team but it was one of those things that happen in racing. We were fortunate that nobody was injured. I think that both the Fire & Police MX National and the Supercross team are headed in the right direction. Next week we will be in San Fransisco, I know to dress warm for the City on the Bay............e

1-09-07    The last week or so has been pedal to the medal. I can't believe we got through the first round of Supercross as well as we did. I am so stoked about this season right now. I had only met 2 of the riders going into Anaheim 1 and didn't know the other two that well. But I have to say that I am pleased to have all 4 of these guys on the team, it was a pleasure to work with then and the rest of the team for the first round. The entire team came together and the result made for a very successful first round. We had 3 riders attempt to qualify and all 3 ended up in the night show. Tyler Kalisiak was planning on doing the West Coast Lites but due to a shoulder injury switched to the East. Joe Oehlhof rode well but missed the main event in the 450 class. He had a little bad luck while running in 3rd in the LCQ. Dennis Jonon rode well on his KTM 250 and finished 17th in the Main Event! Great job Dennis. Anthony Charette also rode well but missed the main by a few spots. I was extremely pleased with the results. Remember this was Anaheim 1, the toughest Supercross in the World!...............ACP is less than a week away, yes the start of a new season is upon us again. A chance to become a National Champion is here again. Many of us will be graduating to a new class, some bumping up to a higher skill level and others becoming younger. Becoming younger? Well kind of. Some of us will be moving to the next age group and will become the "KID" in the class. That is one of the great things about our sport, when we hit the next decade we usually get to race against older guys. Older guys mean better results in most cases. Turning fifty is a gift in our sport. I have raced with and against Steve Marquez for over twenty years now. Steve will be like a new born in the Fifty class racing against a bunch of old guys. I think that we should make a new rule. When an FPMXer turns a decade older he/she should have to race their first moto of the series with a diaper on the outside of their O'NEAL or AXO gear. Yeah, Steve Marquez in a huggies next Monday! (That rule should be dropped for 2009 of course). See you guys at the PHX SX and then ACP..............e
